How to Play Sheriff of Nottingham

Sheriff of Nottingham is a game for 3-5 players, age 10 and up, that takes about an hour to play. Set in the city of Nottingham during the late medieval era, players act as merchants trying to get their goods through the city gates while avoiding taxes. The Sheriff of Nottingham is also trying to collect taxes, and will stop any player he suspects of cheating.

To begin, each player chooses a color and takes the corresponding deck of cards and a scoring marker of the same color. The Sheriff of Nottingham also takes a scoring marker, as well as a bag of coins. The game board is placed in the center of the table, and each player places their scoring marker on the "0" space on the score track. Shuffle the goods cards and deal 5 to each player. Deal 4 goods cards to the Sheriff of Nottingham, face down. These are his taxes.

The game is played over a series of rounds, with each round consisting of 3 phases: draw cards, play cards, and end the round. The first player to reach 20 points or more wins the game.

In phase 1, players draw cards from their deck in order to get enough goods to trade. They can either take all 5 cards or just take 2 and draw 3 replacement cards. After they have drawn their cards, they pass their hand to the left so that everyone has a new hand of 5 cards. If at any point a player has 4 or more taxpayers in front if them (cards that are worth points at the end of the game), they must give one card to the Sheriff of Nottingham immediately. These tax collectors cannot be discarded or traded away; they must be kept until the end of the game.

In phase 2, players take turns playing one card at a time from their hand. Cards can be played for 1 or 2 different effects depending on what type of card it is: goods cards are used to trade for other goods cards or money; penalty cards are used to collect taxes from other players or penalize them in some way; action cards can be used for various special effects such as stealing goods from other players or getting out of paying taxes. When playing a card, you must either use it for its effect or trade it away for another card; you cannot keep it in your hand. The only exception is when playing an action card; these can be kept until needed but must be played by turn 7 at latest or they are automatically discarded). At any time during this phase, if a player has no more cards in hand they draw 5 new ones from their deck.

After all players have had a chance to play one card, phase 3 begins. In this phase, all played cards are resolved one at a time starting with the Sheriff of Nottingham's tax collectors and going clockwise around the table. For each tax collector played, the owner collects 1 coin from each other player (unless they have an action card that says otherwise). Then any other penalties that were played are resolved: stolen goods are returned to their rightful owners, fines are paid, etc. Finally any rewards from action cards are given out. The round then ends and players pass their hands clockwise again so everyone has 5 new cards for next round..

The game continues until either someone reaches 20 points or there are not enough cards left in anyone's deck for another round. In either case, whoever has the most points at end wins
